ASEAN Turn On 44 Years Old

sby asean 44

On August 8, 2011, the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) turns on 44 years old. Established on August 8, 1967 in Bangkok, ASEAN has evolved into a regional organization that has an important role in maintaining development and stability in the region as well as in accelerating region to region and global cooperation.

With the ratification of ASEAN charter on December 15, 2008, ASEAN’s really become a new organization with rules and legal personality. ASEAN codify ASEAN norms, rules and values as well as set a clear target for ASEAN. The challenge is how to formulate rules and regulations to implement the Charter? How to interpret the major concept behind the Charter? In this regard, no wonder if there is ongoing battle of ideas in setting the rules and policies implementation.

Moreover, as mentioned by the President of the Republic of Indonesia Soesilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) in his statement at the opening ceremony of 44th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting in Bali on 19 July 2011, ASEAN now face a reality that the frequency of people to people (p-to-p) contact in the ASEAN member states has surface formal contacts between the government officials. It is showing that peoples have central role in ASEAN.

English is Difficult Language for Some

An email message comes to my inbox as well as my Blackberry Messenger informing the true story of the Japan Prime Minister Yosihiro Mori who made a mistake when speaking in English with the U.S President Barack Obama. It is claimed that those true story came from the Japanese Embassy in the United States.

This is the complete text:

A few days ago, Days ago, Prime Minister Mori received some instructions in Basic English conversation before he visits Washington and meets president Barack Obama…

The instructor told Mr. Mori: When you shake hand with President Obama, please say ‘How are you’. Then Mr. Obama should say, ‘I am fine, and you?‘. And you respond saying: ‘Me too’. Afterwards we, translators, will do the work for you. It seems very simple, but the truth is…

60 Years the European Union

60 eu

On May 9, 2010, 27 European Union (EU)  member states celebrated its 60th year of its birthday. We must admitted that the founders of the  EU are actually people who are knowledgeable and farsighted. Beginning with the Robert Schuman proposal, former French foreign minister and one of the founders of the EU, on May 9, 1950 to establish cooperation between European countries in the form of community, 60 years later the proposal materialized with the integration of the European Community, known as the EU.

Soekarno: Head To Nation

soekarno

First Achievement On Indonesia’s Diplomacy

perjanjian linggarjati

The Linggajati Agreement was a key political accord in the struggle of Indonesia for Independence. When the Republic of Indonesia proclaimed its independence on August 17, 1945, right after Japanese surrender to the Allies, Colonialist Government of Dutch tried to regain control of the former East Indies by sending more troops to attack Indonesian strongholds. It was noticed that between 1945 and 1949 they undertook two military actions.

In this regard, the freedom fight continued and Dutch military aggressions met with solid resistance from Indonesian troops. Along with military action, the young Republic of Indonesian conducted also a diplomatic offensive against the Dutch. Indonesia raised the Dutch’s invasion to the United Nations and pushed the Dutch Government to negotiate.
